| The
album was supposed to be released already 1999. But inspite of the
invested time the guys were not satisfied with the result of their
work. So the decision to record the album once again was made quite
fast.
«When we went to the studio the first time we had the
feeling that we did not get out the maximum of the songs. Maybe
it was our fault as we changed the songs very often and so I think
they lost their charme within all this time. Who knows maybe it
was because of the season, in which we recorded the songs. It was
wintertime and the sound of the tracks was too depressive for our
taste», Valo explains.
The songs had been quite long as well. Some lastet up to 7 minutes,
so the band came to the conclusion that this would be too much and
they started to arrange everything new.
Someday the finnish BMG suggested a producer. He should give them
some tricks. This guy was John Fryer. He had already done some work
for eg. Nin Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, The Sisters of Mercy,...
The first meeting went very well. Ville: «John opened
our eyes, he looked at our material without any knowledge about
the previous once and he didn’t have any expectations as well.
He concentrated on the support of our talents and he gave us important
tips».
HIM changed into the Rockfield Studios in Wales where Black Sabbath
had already done some recordings in the past.
While John Fryer still had a lot of work with mixing the different
tracks the guys got an offer to make the soundtrack for the Roland
Emmerich film "The 13th Floor" with Josef Rusnak as director.
With the help of GUN it did not take long till Mr. Emmerich had
his Soundtrack: "Join Me In Death". The single was released
on 02.11.99, it went straight on top of the charts. With 250.000
sold copys HIM got gold the first time.
"Razorblade Romance" itself was released on 24.01.00.
It did not take long 'til "Razorblade Romance" followed
the single on top of the charts. The guys got platin on 23.10.00
in Cologne.
Besides "Join Me In Death", "Razorblade Romance"
brought out more succesfull singles like: "Right Here In My
Arms", "Gone With The Sin" and "Poison Girl".
At the end "Razorblade Romance" was sold 450.000 times
and HIM got several media awards, a nomination for the german Echo
award and tripple gold for this succesfull album.
